"The sécond legal hanging (in Estill County, Ky.), was
that of Joe Finnell, usually called Joe Stone, a negro,
for attempted rape, This hanging was in 1862, and he was
hanged on the same gallows used for Hawkins (in 1857)
and which is yet standing about one mile from Irvine,
This gallows is a crude and primitive affair, consisting
of a strong post firmly set in the ground, with an arm
extending from the top,"
