Piper, a 2lj-year-old white man, was the eexton at the Warren A¥enue
Baptist Church in Dorchester, Mass. On the night of Dec. 5,,.1873,
he crept up behihd a young Irish lady, Miss 5ridget Landregan, who
was walking home along and bludgeoned her to death, fleeing when
people who lived nearby rushed to the. street on hearing her screams.
The club that he used was traced to a carriage shop owned by Piper's
father and he was the leading suspect in the case, but officers
could find no direct evidence againsthim and he was not charged
with the crime. On Sunday, May 23, 1875, following the morning
services at his Church, Piperx lured 5-year-old Mabel Young into
the B&E#8 belfrey and bludgeoned her to death with a baseball bat
that was used at Shurch picnics. He leaped from the belfrey to

the ground after the girl's screams had attracted attention and
went about his duties, At first he danied that there was a key to
the belfrey and it was forced oper WASEKB and the little girl was
discovered in a dying condition. When Piper was searched, the key
was found on him and he was taken into custody, Finally he con-
fessed the killing of the little girl, the mirder of Miss Landregan
and attacks on two other women who had survived his bludgeoning but
were unable to identify him. Evidently Piper was a sadist who re-
