__ Benjamin F, Harden was hanged at Tazewell Court House,
Vas, on June 28, 1867, for the mrder of Bierne of Ken.
Execution before largest crowd ever to assemble in Taze-
well County, When he was on gallows, minister repeatedly
asked him to kneel and pray and he refused each time,
When he went to speak he said he supposed he had no friend
there, The clergyman asked-all who felt sympathy for him
from a moral point of view to raise hands and all did so,
larden then said he didn't believe them and pgoke for 30
minutes, contradicting his written confession and oral
statements and accusing two prominet witnesses of swear-
ing falsely against him,. Stood on scaffold "calm, cool
and unconcerned" except for shedding a few tears at the
beginning of his address. When the trap fell, the rope
broke and he fell to the ground stunned and nearly choked
