Sheeking Murder.—-We learn that]
James Murphy, Sen. Esq. one of the|
most wealthy and respectable citizens:
of Burke coutny, was lately murdered
ina most barbarousand shocking man-
ner, by Tisdale Spenser, one of his
tenants. Uaving disagreed ina settle-
ment attempted to be made by them,
Spenser requested Mr. Murphy to
come to his house at a particular day ;
which he did, in company of severa}
otherventlemen. After seme conver-
sation on the subject, Spenser propo-
sel that they should retire to some
other place and settle alone, and led
the way to his stock yard where he
had his rifle concealed. Suspecting
no danger, none of the persons in
company with Mr. Murphy had noti-
cea in what direction they had retired,
until the discharge of the gun, or the
cry of some one near the house, that
Spenser had struck him alarmed them.
‘Shey hastened to his relief; but had
only time to see Spenser, who it scems
bad left him, return and aim another
blow, and then made his escape. Up-
on reaching the spot, Mr. Murphy
was found prostrated, his head shock-
ingly mangled and bleeding. Ile dicd

my pen in hand to inform you of one of the most atrocious and fiendish mrders
ever committed within the recollection of the citizens of this community. On
Tuesday last, a yoting lady by the name of Susan Jane Andrews, of respectable
family and connexions, residing a few miles from this place, came here on some
business, which having adjusted, she set out on her return, But not arriving home
on that nor the succeeding day, and learning where she was last seen, the family
of the deceased began to apprehend that something had befallen her, and accordingly
on the evening of the third day search was made for her, which resulted only in
discovery of some of her clothing, It being night, further seakch was siven over
until the next morning, Friday, When it was again renewed, she was discovered
lying buried beneath the leaves and straw about 150 yards from where part of her
clothes had been found the preceiling evening. A Jury of Inquest was forthwith held
over the body, and when uncovering her, a sight shocking to humanity presented
itself to view. The skull was partially beaten in, most of her upper teeth
broken out, and otherwise dreadfully mangled, Suppicion was immediately fixed on a
certain negro man who was seen lurking along the road throughout the day, and the
suspicion receives additional strength by the said negro's eloping that same
evening and is now running at large, The Jury rendered a verdict of Murder, and
from the stronest circumstantial evidence, to have been cmmmittkd by said negro,
