Offence: Rape

Location: Petersburg VA

Ex Date: 10-13-1865

Details: Shepherd was a corporal in the 38th U.S.

Colored Regiment who sometime during the
seige of Petersburg got together with two other members
of his company and gang-raped a white woman. The two
accomplices were executed by order of a court-martial
shortly after the crime, (their names and the date are
unspecified), but Shepherd remained at large for some
time. The hanging took place at Camp Hamilton.
