"Livingston, Tex., June 29, 1906-Jack Wilkerson was hanged
promptly at 2:03 this afternoon for the murder of his wife,
formerly Miss Hooker, She was his second wife, ‘Wilkerson
made a short talk after ascending the scaffold, denying
that he was guilty of any of theseveral charges laid to
him, but the killing of his wife, which he very much re-
sretted, and would not do it again for all the world if
he could but recall her. He said he had made peace with
God and was prepared to die; that he had prayed to God for
strength on the gallows, which prayer seened to have been
answered. His talk was calm and deliberate, the man show-
ing practically no excitement, He refused to say why he
killed his wife, and that God only knew why he did it. He
said the sheriff thought he knew the cause, but did not,
and that no one wuld know, His last words were: 'People,
