who, with his associates, engaged in virtually every type of criminal
activity that might earn a dishonest dollar, On July 10, 1876, he
-picked a man's pocket and stole a watch, He was fleeing when Police
Sargeant George James MeGiven overtook him and King stabbed him in
the abdomen, He was overpowered by persons who witnessed the incident
and narrowly escaped lynching, At his trial, he E&XEXERH pleaded
guilty to second degree murder and was given a life sentence at the
State Prison at Clinton and there he was assigned to work in the
kitchin, His best friend, another kitchen workeryamnz named Mike
Hamilton, was serving a five year sentence for grand larceny. Presi-
dent Garfield was shot on July 2, 1881, and on July 13, the two con-
victs, at work in the kitchen, got into an argument over the merits
of ‘ice President Arthur who would succeed to the Presidency. should
Garfield die. ‘They decided to go to the woodshed and settle their
differences in opinion by fighting. When they entered the shed,
