"Jacksonville, Fla., 8-12-1881-Be@njamin Bird, colored,

convicted of the murder of Policeman Nelson, colored, in
June, 1880, was executed at noon today in the jail yard
in the presence of about 500 persons, A short while
previous to, his execution he made a confession of the crim
to the sheriff and others, but while on the gallows he
protested his innocence, the trap was sprung and Bird
fell, but as the noose had not heen properly arranged, he
slipped out and fell to the ground. “e got up with the
sheriff's assistance and again walked upon the trap. The
rope was properly adjusted and he was launched into eter-
nity. He fell about 7 feet and died from strangulation,
His heart ceased to beat in 1/7 minutes, and he was cut
down in 27 minutes, Everything passed off quietly."
