for the murder, insSeptember, 1895, of Henry
Pendleton, also black. Chapman believed that
Pendleton had insulted his mother and he
tracked him down to his home at Rixeyville
where he caught him gathering wood chips in
his yard. Chapman stuck his shotgun under
Pendleton's chin and fired both barrels. He
had two trials and the sheriff allowsd his
16-year-old son to assist him on the scaffold,
