belonging to Mr, Eli Hewitt, of the city of Baltimore,
stopped at the residence of Mr, Niell, who keeps a public
house at a small place eaalled Hell Town, a shortdistance
on this side of Ellicott's Mills, and called for something
to drink, which having procured, he proffered payment with
a fifty dollar note, which, from his subsequent conduct,
he supposed would not be changed. As soon as he found,
however, that Mr, Niell was able to exchange his note, he
insisted on having it returned; this, of course, was refus
ed, The mulatto then, with an axe, made a stroke at Mr,
Niell, and wounded him severely; and before the weapon
could be wrested from him, he made several blows at at
Mrs. Pierpoint, who kept house for Mr, Niell¥ and wounded
