HUMPHRIES, Frank $,

Humphries, a well-to-do white farmer, lived about ten miles from
Milledgeville, Baldwin Co,, Gae, as did his brother, Elisha, They
were married to two sisters named Raines and a third, un-married
sister lived with Mr. and Mrs, Elisha XM@QMHaHX Humphries, Frank
Humphries! wife was several years older thah he and her health was
bad. Over a period of time he had developed a romantic interest
in Miss Carrie Raines. who frequently visited in their home with
their niece, Ella Humphries, the grown daughter of Elisha, On the
morning of March , 1886, he, induced Mis wife to thke their three
children and go to visit a neighbor, saying that he was going on a
hunting trip and would not. return until late that night, Instead
of going hunging, he went to Elisha's home and told Carrie that his
wife was dying and had something important to tell her, Carrie,
accompanied by Ella, MKH# started to Frank's house in his company
and were not seen alive again, Late that night, he appeared at
home and told his wife that four men had accosted him, Carrie and

Ella in the woods and that he had been mocked unconscious, He said
that when he regained his sense, he found their bodies, The aeighbor=
hood was notified and Humphries took a crowd to the scene of the
crime, Both women had been raped and he became an inmediate suspect

-intent- of lytching him but thks was averted when he was taken to the ~—
Bibb County Jail in Macon for safekeeping. H is conviction and the
sentence of death were not appealed theugh he continued to maintain
his innocence until the week of his execution when he admitted that
he had raped the two women, shot them and cut their throats, He was
hanged in Milledgeville on Sept. 24, 1886, His last words were:
"Pull kh out the cap. It smothers me, Don't put the rope about. my

neck too ee
