Charles, a 28-year-old Gainesville, Ga., black man, had been em-
ployed Bor some time by a 67-year-old bachelor recluse, Walter
Simpson, a prosperous farmer who lived in the Poplar Springs
Community, Morgan's District, about ten miles south of Gainesville,
On July 5, 1935 ; he and his friend Daniel, a 2h~year-old black man,
went to Simpson's home and bludgeoned the elderly white man to
death with an axe, crushing his head to a pulp. They stole several
hundred dollars that Simpson had in his possession. The body was
discovered two days later by a neighbor and Charles was taken into
custody shortly afterwards. He was suspected because he had spent
a considerable sum of money after the murder and he had over $100
in his possession when taken into custody. When it was learned
that Daniel also had been spending a lot of money, he, too, was
arrested. Both men confessed, but BEXXKSA claimed that the crime
had been instigated by a white farmer who had disputed a land line
with Simpson and this man also was arrested. All three mere taken
to Atlnata and placed in the Fulton Tower jail for safekeeping.
