Hall, a 52-year-old white native of South Carolina, and his wife were
living in Las Vegas, Nev., where they became acquainted with Zohn C,
"Hardrock Jack" SW O'Brien, a bootlegger, and his wife and 15-year-
old daughter, Hall and O'Brien became friendly and Hall agreed to
furnish $680.00 for Q'Brien to use to buy whiskey. They went to
purchase the whiskey, but the seller was not at the meeting place
and they returned to the motel cabin which the two familys shared,
The next momning, the money was missing and Hall accused O'Brien of
having stolen it and warned him that if he ever saw he or his family
spehding it, he would kill him, They all moved to a two-room cabin
on the Fox Ranch six miles from Las Vegas and lived there for a few
days. On thenight of June 15, 1931, around 10:30, they were returnin
from Las Vegas. When they reached the ranch, Hall drew a pistol and
began firing. O'Brien leaped from the car and ran but three of the
bullets struck him, inflicting mortal wounds, While Hall was beating
Mrs. O'Brien over the head with the empty pistol, the daughter fled

for help, The Halls wre arrested the next day at Yermo, Calif,,

and returned to Nevada, At first Hall claimed that he did not know
