Mathis, a Lafayette Co., Miss., white farmer, also made..and. soldz .
"moonshine" whiskey. On Saturday evening, Nove 16, 1901,.-he.was.

in the process of killing and cleaning a hog, assisted by. two. black
men, Orlando H&EX lester and Bill Jackson, when two Deputy United
States Marshals, John A, and Hugh Montgomery, arrived ah his farm
and placed him under arrest for the illegal distillation of whiskey.
Mathis agreed to accompany them to the County Seat at Oxford, but
requested that he first be, allowed to finish cleaning the hog so
that his wife might have something to eat while he was in jail, ‘The
two officers went into the house and lester was sent to the home of
Mathis' father-in-law where he borrowed a shot gun. “hen he re-
turned, he went into the house and killed both of the Montgomerys,
Mrs, HX8KK6KXK Mathis was sent to her father's house while Mathis
and Lester mutilated the bodies of the two officers and then burned
the house and bodies in an effort to conceal the crime, lester,
Jackson, Mrs, Mathis and her relatives were taken into custody al-
