LU SING

Lu Sing was a Chinaman about whose background nothing definite is
knowne He arrived in Bozeman, Montana, from Astoria, Ore,, a few
days prior to Oct. 3, 1905, and stayed exclusively among the mem-
bers of his own nationality, On the morning of Oct, 3, 1905, he
entered the kitchen of a Chinese restumrant located in a frame
building on the corner of Main and Bozeman Streets, and after m aking
small talk for several minutes with his fellow countrymen, he worked
his away behind a meat block where Tom Sing (no relation) was eating
and with no warning picked up a meat cleaver and struck Tom Sing
over the head and neck six times, decapitating him. Arrested ale
most immediately, he would make not statement other than to say:

"If me no kill, me no good, If me kill, me all right," Chis re-
mark, which he repeated several times, was ultimately used against
him at his trial to show premeditation and formed the basis of an
unsuccessful appeal of the conviction to the Supreme Court of Mon-
tana, Because of the reticence of the Orientals in Bozeman, no mo-
tive was immediately ascertained and it could hot be shown that the

two men had ever had any dispute, Authorities ultimately heard ru-

mors which were accepted as fact to the effect that Tom Sing's wife
had, at one time, been the concubine or slave of a wealthy Chinaman
