Heyward, a black veteran of World War If, was a sharecropper and la-
borer who lived in the Seabrook Community of Beaufort Cos, Ss Co
His brother Willie lived in the same community and was at the home
of Benjamin around 5 O'clock one afternoon in the fall of 1925 when
Beaufort County Policeman Paul B, Cardin, accompanied by a local
constable and a young black boy, arrived to arrest Willie on a mis-
demeanor warrant, They Stopped at Benjamin's house and the constable
walked around to the rear door while Cardin went to the front door
with the boy remaining in the automobile, The door opened suddenly
and Cardin was shot through the. stomach with a load 66 mmber four
