words were: "I appreciate eveyything Governor Smith and others did in
my behalf, God bless my wife and children} I count upon you gentlemen
to look after them." A collection totaling $11), was gathered from
among the prison visibtrs and witnesses for his family.

Minnick, a 33-year-old white native of Californiay who claimed to have
been a college graduate, left his wife and two children, moving first
to West Virginia and from there to Buffalo, N. Y., where he roomed in
a boarding house located at 180 South Division St., and was employed
as an automobile salesman, He persuaded a 19«yeareold girl who

roomed at the same address and a taxi driver to aid him in robbing the
jewelry store owned by August Hoyler at 313 East Genessee St, On the
evening of May 10, 192h, they drove up to the store in a stolen taxi,
The third man, George W,. Bittle, waited in the car while Mennick and
the girl, Stella Mackowaka, entered and, purporting to be engaged,
asked to see two trays of KXW¥MK rings, The 2l-year-old clerk, Rufus
Eller, placed the bzays on the counter and Minnick drew a gun and shot
him through the head, inflicting a wound/from which Eller died the
next day, Mennick and Miss Mackowaka each grabbed a tray and ran from
the store as Mennick fired his gun at Mr, Hoyler who had strated from
the back of the building, The stolen cab would not start and Bittle
joined Minnick and the girl as they fled from the store on foot,
