"August 31, 1906-Henry Bailey, colored, ws hanged at New
Bern, Ne Ces this morning for the murder of John M. Lan=
caster, Death resulted from strangulation in twelve
minutes. Bailey died protesting that the killing was
done in self defense. Up to this morning he pretended to
be indifferent as to his future existence, but almost at
the last moment he professed religion and was baptized in
the jail, He made a long and rambling talk from the sca-
ffold, as did his spiritual advisers." TIMES DISPATCH,
