MATTHEWS, Mack

Matthews, a Tyler Co., Texe, black man, discovered after he was
married that his wife had been keeping company with another man for
six years prior to their marriage. He questioned her about it and
BREXESXAXKAR about why she had not mentioned it to him mmbdae before
their marriage and she told him that it was too late to do anything
about it then. She left the house and went to “hurch and when she
returned he questioned her once again, receiving the same replys

confessed stating that his motive was jealousy over her infidelity
prior to their marriage and KBE the fact that she had not tolk him
about it before they were wed. Convicted, he became the first man
to be electrocuted in Texas on Feb. 8, 1924. He was seated in the
chair and it was discovered that it was not connected properly so
he was taken back to his cell while adjustments were made and then
returned and electrocuted.
