"Tn 1856 the village (of Lafayette, La.) was
shocked by the disapnearance from her home at
h1S West Main St. of the widow Veuve Missionier,

own slave who had placed it there. He was quick
ly apprehended and, as he was being tried in the
courthouse, the nearby church bell tolled for
