"Nashville, Gas, July 9, 1909-That the hangman's noose is
a*bunglesome and merciless mode of execution was clearly
demonstrated here today when Marshall Lewis, colored, was
led back on the crudely constructed gallows, blood flow-
ing from his mouth and ‘begging for water, after Sheriff
Le C. Ayers had sprung the trap and the body had dropped
six feet. The second attempt proved unsuccessful in
breaking the condemmed man's neck, death resulting in 15
minutes from strangulation. Lewis shot and killed
Clifford Rutherford, assistant postmaster at Lenox, Ga,.,
