Funston, a 2 Onyaar-old white Oxford Township, Tuscarawas Co., Ohio,
farmer de€ided to augment his agricultural income with highway
robberye On Septe 9, 1825, he shot and killed from ambush William
Cartmell, a post boy who delivered the mail from Coshocton to Free=-
port. Funston was in the process of robbing the body when William
4KEGH Johnson, a resident of Steubenville who had been traveling
with Cartmell and who had stopped at a spring for a drink of water
appeared. Funston told him that he, too, was a traveler who had
heard the shot and suggested that they go in opposite directions
and locate cabins to report the murder. Johnson reported to a
settler named Booth but Funston disappeared. As Johnson had no way
of proving the presence of another man, he was arrested and charged
with the murder, He persuaded the Sheriff to have all of the young
men in the area assemble and swore that he could pick out the actual
murderer and described a scar on his hand, He selected Funston from
the crowd and when Anta was discovered to bear a scar similar
to the one described by vo knson, Johnson was released and F fon
was charged with the crime, Corroboration was obtained when i was
found that Funston had paid a bill that he owed a local gunsmith
