"A special to the Courier-Journal from Pikeville, Ky.,
says: News reached here from Coeburn, Va,, to the effect
that Mary Snodgrass was hanged at that place last Friday
(7-10-1896) for the murder of her child, The Snodgrass
woman was a disreputable character and was compelled to
leave this place on that account, She went to Coeburn
where her child was cared Byr by negroes until it was
about 6 months old, when it was turned over to her. She
did not want it and tried to get rid of it in various
waySe One night about midnight the people living close
by heard the little one screaming, Black smoke was seen
issuing from the chimney and the door was burst in to
ascertain the trouble. The child had been placed in the
fire and the mother was holding it in the flames with a
