only I don't like to die this way." Prior to his execution, he told
some reporters in an interview that he had XXKKM lied when he said
that Mrs, Lawler had hired him to kill her husband and admitted that
his sole motive was to steal the wagon and team which he heped te
sell for money to finance his marriage to his pregaant sweetheart.

Mosier, a 19-year-old white man, was born in Guba, I11,, and moved
to Kansas with his family, settling first in Topeka and then near
Anthony, Harper County. He was having an affaar with a young lady
and when she became pregnant, he determined to marry her, Without
money, he decided te kill Hugh B, Lawler, a farmer whose land was
near that of the Mosters, and sell his wagen and team. On October
29, 1886, her persuaded Lawler to accompany him on a hunting trip
inte the Indian Territery, Lawler insisted on taking his ll-year-
old stepson and they left Harper County that day, After dark,
Mosier got into the back of the wagon, cocked his gun and shot
Lawler in the back of the head. The boy pleaded for his life and
Mosier agreed not to kill him if he would help him with the horses,
They goti down from the wagon and the bey clenched with Mosier, As
they struggled the other barrel of the gun discharged but neither
was struck, The boy then started funning for his life, Mosier
unhitched the horses, got on one of them ahd started riding in the
game direction. The boy hid in some bushes until Mosier passed and
then follewed him, When Mosier weached his family's home, he went
te bed and was arrested the next morning after the bey had reached
