Florenzo, 35<years-old, was a native of Manilla, the Philippines, who
went first to Havana, Quba, and then to New Orleans, La,, where he
became the lover of a milattress named Marie Louise, He became sus#
picious of her conduct with another man and, on the night of Jan, 16,
1876, while she lay sleeping in their room located at 133 Bourbon St,
he killed her by stabbing her through the heart, He then scattered
several hundred dollars in gold, silver and bank notes about the
room and stayed there until morning when he went in search of her
suspected paramour, When he spotted the man, he shot at him but
missed and was taken into custody, He then confessed that he had
murdered his mistress and officers went to the room where they found
the body, Florenzo, who could not’ speak English and could comverse
only through a Spanish interpreter, was speedily brought to trial,
convicted and sentenced to die, The conviction was affirmed by the
Supreme Court of Louisiana on appeal and on June 15, 1877, he was
hanged from a gallows erected on the north wall of the jail yard

at the Parish ‘rison along with two other condemned men, Considered

to be of low intelligence, it was some time after the murder before

he seemed to realize the serious consequences he faced and he then
turned to religion, As he sat on the saaffold while the death warrant
was being read, he muttered prayers in Spanish, His neck was broken
