Stickney, a 20-year-old draftsman in the Houston office of the Texas
Highway Department, had.long RBAXR been infatuated with Shirley
Barnes, the wife of his best friend, Cliff Barnes, also a draftsman
with the Highway Department. On the afternoon of May 2), 1958, the
trio, drove down to Galveston beach where they spent the afternoon
drinking beer. In the early evening, they all lay down to take a
nap and, while the Barnes were sleeping, Stickney bludgeoned both
to death with a tire tool. He placed Parnes' body in the trunk of
his car and Shirley Barnes! body in the back seat and drove back
to the “arnes! apartment in Houston, On the way, he hid Barnes!
body in a deserted area. “hen he arrived at the apartment, he took
Shirley's body into a bedroom, undressed it and sexually violated
the corpse of the woman who he had Loved. -Shirley Barnes!’ body was
found on May 31, and it was believed for a while that Sarnes had
killed her. ‘Subsequently his body was discovered and an alert was
issued for the arrest of Stickney who had disappeared on the day
following the murders. He was caught XHXK near Perth, Canada, and
waived extradition. When he arrived in Texas, he made a full and
complete confession of the murder of his best friend and his wife.
