ALLEN, Joseph ("Toledo Slim" and "Coon Can Slim")

Allen, a 55«year=old black man, lived and operated a "wine joint" at
2933 Woodland Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio, On Dec. 2, 1951, he pawned
some of his clothing and purchased a single barrakd shotgun which he
used to shoot and killed Willie "Yo Yo" Arnold as he sat Sleeping in
a chair in his room at the same address, He then went looking for
Berry "Dedeck" Joiner with the announced intention of killing him
also, Joiner, dining in a restaurant with one of his friends, was
warned and immediately left the restaurant, He saw Allen approaching
with his gun but, instead of fleeing, turned and walked casually in
the opposite direction, Allen followed and shot him in the back of
the head, killing him instantly, Allen fled to Baltimore and remained
there undetected until after he was arrested and sentenced to six
months in jail on conviction of assault and battary early in 1955, dn
June, after he had served four months of his sentence, he was identi-
fied as the Joseph Allen wanted in Cleveland for double murder and
the FBI took him into custody, He was returned to Cleveland where he
maintained that he had killed Arnold and Joiner because they had sto-

len his winnings and his own money after he had won from them in a
poker game. Hs trial and conviction were not appealed and he was

electrocuted at the Ohio State Prison on Sept. 20, 1956,
