STOUT, Thomas, Jr, (Bud)
Stout, a 23-year-old black farm laborer, resided at Kidville, about
nine miles from Lexington, Fayette Co,, Ky, He and another black man,
KEEXSX Sim Lee, raised a crop of tobacco together and on the evening
of March 27, 1905, they got into an argument offer a division of the
proceeds, Stout went to his home and procured his #KMH shotgun, He
was walking XHXKMEXX¥ towards Gilead Church when he encountered Lee
and they began quarreling again, Stout claimed that Lee had earlier
threatened to shoot him and that Lee drew his weapon and fired at him
before he returned the fire with his shotgun, firing both barrels, one
of which inflicted a superficial wound, Stout said that he bhen knock-
ed Lee to the ground with the barrel of his gun and shot Lee in the
back with his own pistol, killing him, Stout went home that night
and the next morning, as he was walking to work, passed by KaK&X but
did not look at Lee's body which was lying by the side of the road,
The body was found later that day and Stout was arrested, He con-
fessed, giving the above version of the murder and caaiming sblf-de-
fense, At his trial, he was convicted and sentenced to die and, as
there was no appeal, he was hanged in the Fayette County Jail Yard on
Nov. 23, 1906, He went to his death calmly, mounting the scaffold
with assistance or hesitation,
