WEBSTER, Charles

Webster, a young black man, and a companion, George Washington,
traveling about the country, were encamed on the eastern edge of
Louisville, Ky,, in October, 1878, On several. different occasions
they went to the home of a German farmer named Otte who lived nearby
and solicited and were given food, WMEXMXHMK On the night of Oct,

18, Mr, Otte surprised then and some other blacks drunk and playing
dice on his farm and-he ordered them not to come to his house again,
Late the next afternoon, Otte's ll-yeareold daughter, Frances, went

to the pasture to drive home some cows, Webster and Washington dragg
her into a eooded area and both of them raped her, cutting her genitals

little girl dragged herself home and reported the incident to her
family, A searching party was immediately formed and it combed the
