"Louisville, Miss,, 8-30-191l-For the first time in 35
years the people of Mississippi have had a public hanging,
and it was one of the biggest days in this section, Bell
Gage, a negro, paid the penalty at noon for the murder of
his wife. ‘thousands of people came to Louisville, Ven-
ders had secured concessions of all kinds, and restaurants
had been hastily constructed about the gallow§ for feeding
the throngs with sandwiches and coffee. Circus lemonade
and hot peanuts also were on hand, ‘The crowd about the
scaffold became so great that ropes had to be stretched,
Men fought for places of vantage, Gage went calmly to his
