Sparrow, a white man, was convicted on March #@, 1820, of having
killed a man named John Hunt in Orange County, N. Ce, and sentenced
to die.e Prior to his being hanged before a large crowd of peuple
in Hillsborough on May 12, 1820, he was taken frum the jail to
church where he attended services, Sparrow @displayed great forti-
tude and resignation" and made a brief address from the scaffold in
which he said that he was dying innocent of any intention of injuring
Hunt. His last words were: "I hope $00n to be with my Father atove,"

Sparrow was defended by Thomas Ruffin, future Chief Justice of North
Carolina, According to Kemp Plummer Ballard in MEMORIES OF AN OLD-
TIME TAR HEEL, the crime occurred on the edge of the campus of the
University of North Carolina (page 101)
