THREE SLAVES
Three
Exam slaves owned by William Dunbar, a Scottish planter and scientist
residing near Richmond (Baton Rouge), Lae, and engaged in making
staves plotted with one owned by two men named Watts and Flowers to
foment an insurrection, The plotting was carried out on Mr, Dunbar's
plantation and when a slave who was not involved in the plans reveal-
ed them to his master, Mr, Dunbar was notified. He immediately
bound one of the three accused blacks and, taking him on a river boaty
went with other white men to take into custody the slave belonging
to Watts and Flowers, The terrified black man professed his innocence
of any plot to bebell and finally threw himself over the side of the
boat and drowned, This convinced the planters of the truthfulness of
the accusations and, after the slave belonging to Watts and Flowers
was taken into custody, they returned to Dunbar's plantation and
arrested his other two slaves. A week later, on July 1, 1776, the
three men were tried and convicted and on July 2, 1776, they were
hangede Other blacks who were implicated but considered less guilty
were given lesser punishments, As there was no assembly at the time,
a subscription was taken up among the other property owners to
pay the masters for the value of the slaves,
