BYERS, William Snyder
Byers, 2 17-year-old white New York City youth who planned to join -
the Marine Sorps in a short time, met and fell passionabely in love
with 15-year-old Theresa Gresch who lived in a third floor cold-water
flat with her widowed mother, Mrs, Anna Gresch, a shoe factory worker
and charwoman, on 13th Street. Miss Gresch recipbmoated his ardor,
and they immediately consummated their affair, Hach night, while
Mrs. Gresch, worked até her second job as a charwoman,,the couple used
her apartment to make love. On the night of Feb. 25, 195, she re-
turned maxk home early and caught them in the process, %he promptly
ordered Byers from the house and received a promise from her tearful
daughter that she would mend her ways. However, Theresa continued
her affair with Byers and Mrs, Gresch entered on them for a second
time on the night of March |. The couple bludgeoned the woman to
death with a hammer and then stabbed her 21 times. They placed her
body in the bathtub and encased it with plaster of paris, For the
next four days and nights, they had a continuous party in the apart-
ment, inviting all of their friends for drinking and sex orgies.
On March 8, Byers left xk fo join the Marine Corps. Theresa, ex-
plaining that her mother was visiting in florida, continued to live
in the apartment. Finally neighbors, alerted by the stench of the
