MEEKER, Herbert We

Meeker,-a 23-year-old white resident of Millersburg, Ohio, had his
wife, Gertrude, take out an insurance policy, As he did not have the
money: for the first premium, he gave the agent a note for the amount.
he was-under the impression that the policy had been delivered when,
on May lh, 1932, he and his cousin, Harold Young, took Mrs. “eeker for
an automobile ride. They bludgeoned her to death with a tire tool,
ran the car over her and threw her body into a stream where it was
discovered. Meeker made an inquiry of the insurance agent shortly
after the body was discovered and the agent returned the application
and note to him because proper payment had not been made. Meeker was
arrested and charged’ with the crime which he promptly tried to blame
on his cousin, ¥oung, stating that he was present but was an unwilling
participant. Before Young could be taken into custody, he committed
suicide and Meeker alone stood trial for the murder where he was con~
victed and sentenced todéath. He was electrocuted at the Ohio State
Prison on March 22 , 1933.
