was shot and almst instantly killed.this afternoon by
Abe Smalls, a negro desperado, whom Neve and three other
officers were attempting to arrest in a field near this
city. . Smalls shot and wunded Detective Humprhies a few
nights ago, and then fled, carrying with him his pistol
and a Winchester rifle, The officers have been on his
track ever sincee This afternoon he was located near
the city, and a squad of officers went out to capture him,
He was found hidden under a hay stack, and when surrounded
began firing on the officers. Neve was shot through the
lung and died in a few minutes. Another bullet cut one of
his horse's ears off, After Smalls exhausted his fire
from his revolver, he opened fire with his Winchester,
