BALDWIN, Sam

Baldwin, a 35-year-old black resident of Onancock, Va., had served a
term on the State Road gang for having cut 23-year-old “ertha Wright
in a lover's quarrel. He had been released on parole for but a short
time when, on the night of Oct, 4, he went to her home in Onancock
and sought admittance at the front door, When she refused to answer
his knock, he walked around to the back door and broke it in. He
found her, John McCabe a 35-year-old black man, and two white men in-
Side and, becoming enraged with jealousy, drew a knife and cut Mrs
Wright's throat from ear-to-ear, killing her instantly. He stabbed
McCabe ten times, mortally wounding him, and slashed the arm of one
of the white men. Baldwin fled the scene but was captured on Oct,

9 on a farm near Melfa and taken to the County Jail at Accomac where
he was charged with the murder of Mrs, Wright and McCabe, Convicted

and sentenced to die, he was electrocuted at the Virginia State Pri-
