Read, a cya one white native of Maryland, was first arrested in
eeaey City, Texes, for burglary in 1925. Subsequent. arrests-and-re-!_
formatory sentences, were given him in Washington, D. Ce, Lorton, Vas,
and Jessups, Md, After his final release. from a Maryland..reformatory,
he KBSKKAXBB enlisted the aid of War Joseph Kirby, a native of Penn-
sylvania who he had met at the reformatory and 20-year-old Lawrence
Gingrell, a Maryland neighbor, as partners in a holdup gang. On Nov.
a 1936, they were riding around casing service stations with a view
to robbery when they noticed a wealthy 65-year-old Montgomery Coo, Mde
farmer, Elwood D,. Matthews, who had previously, given testimony that
was instrumental in the conviction and imprisonment of, Read's brother.
