KOTOWLCZ, Steve

Kotowicz, a 23-year-old white native of Toledo, Ohio, was .a high
school student in 1933 when he was sent .to the State Boy's Industrial
School on a charge of burglary. After his release, he was again con-
wicted of burglary and sent to the Mansfield Reformatory. Freed on
parole, he entered the LaGrange Street grocery store owned and opera-
ted by Mr. and Mrs, Clement A,Mikolajezyk late on the afternoon of
Sept. 19, 1936, pulled a pistol from underneath his jacket and attempt-
ed to rob the couple who were alone in the store, Mr. Mikolajezyk,
recognizing Kotowicz as one of a group that hanged around on the cor-=
ner thought that he was joking and when he hesitated, Kotowicz shot
him and ran. Mikolajczyk died of h&s woundsz and Kotowicz was
arrested four days later in a Summitt Stree hotel, He kad the pistol
whith which he had shot Mikolajczyk in a dresser drawer in his hotel
room at the time. Convicted by a jury that deliberated for almost
