109 minutes after it received the case, a Kenton County jury convicted
Harold Van Venison, 36, Negro night club entertainer, of criminal
attack and decreed a death by hanging, ‘Was charged with raping Eleanor

Venison, a Covington, Ky., black man, NAKXAXKBKSEXaX was the baritone
singer in a Gospel quartet that frequently sang over a Covi Lng bon
radio station. He had shot at least two men, serving a 110 day sen-
tence in. New Albany, Ind., for one shooting and being acquitted of
the other. He had also served a three year sentence in a Kentucky
prison for, house-breaking,- In the « early morning hours of IE August

7; he _and a Coving ton black youth, Donald Lattimore, raped a
25-year-old white Covington steno; srapher on lonely Charter Oak Read,
Venison oe but Lattimore was arrested shortly afterwards and
named Him as his partner and the instigator of the assault. Latti-
more stated that he was afraid of Venison and was forced to partici-
pate in the rape. .WAE Venison was not captured until Oct. 10, 1937,
