Taylor, a Memphis, Tenn., black man, operated a boot-black stand
on Poplar Street near the bayou. On August 27, 190), 2 free-for-
all among some Memphis blacks broke out across the street from
Taylor's stand and one of his ihtimate friends was getting the
worst in the encounter, Taylor drew a revolver, rushed across the
street and shot Sam Gaines, an imocent bystander who was not even
involved in the affray three times, The senond and third shots
were fired into Gaines! back as he was lying on the ground, Taylor
attempted to flee but was stopped by a eum policeman. He brandished
the weapon at the policeman but was out of ammunition, At his
trial, he was convicted and sentenced to die, He was hanged in the
Memphis Jail Yard on July 18, 1905, His last words were: "I ain't
sorry of death, I'm ready, I'm prepared to meet my God." He
died easily, has neck being broken by the fall.
