Stickel, a white man born on Feb, 9, 1870, lived alone on a scow
near the mouth of the Cowlitz River in Cowlitz Co., Wash, On the
night of Nov, 22, 1899, he shot and killed William B, Shanklin
through a window of his home near Kelso as Shanklin was eating his
supper, After taking money and other valuables from the cabin, Sti-
ckel fired it and the body was discovered in the ruins the next day.
At first it was believed that Shanklin had died in the fire but then
an examination of the body revealed that he had been shot, There
were no clues to the murder and in spite of the fact that the
Governor of Washington offered a $300 reward no progress was made in
solving the casée On Nov, 28, 1900, Mrs. Cornelius Knapp, an aged
woman who lived with her husband near Castle Rock sold six turkeys
for #1,00 each, That night as she and Mr, Knapp sat at their supper
table, Stickel shot her through the netk, killing her instantly, Mr.
Knapp started for the door and Stickel shot him down also, He took
the $6.00 and other belongings before leaving, The bodies were
