18, 1802, addressed to.a black named Roling Pointer of
Powhatan, It said, in part, 'Our travelling friend has
got ten thousand in readiness to.the night.' It was an
obvious reference to an insurrection that had been plottec¢
all over the Southside. In Brunswick,many arrests were
madee One slave was convicted of seditious speech and
given 29 lashes, Two were convicted of plotting to kill
their masters and ordered hanged, It was said that thesk
twoe had approached over slaves @ven as far away as North
Carolina in an attempt to raise a black army and kill all

.According to papers provided by Dr. Philip Schwarz,
Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, on.Aug, 18,
1983, Slaves Isaac, belonging to Estate of Joseph Wilkes,
in possession of widow, Henrietta, and Phill, slave of
Randolph Hagood, were convicted of conspiracy and
insurrection on Feb. 3, 1802, in.Brunswick County, Vir-
ginia, and subsequently hanged, These were undoubtedly
the two mentioned on reverse.
