Schlager, a 32-year-old white resident of 162 Kilhoffer St,, Buffalo,
N. ¥., was a professional safe-cracker who had several felony convic-
tions and had served two sentences at Auburn Prison, There he met
Arthur Brown and Frank Kowalski, burglars, and after all had been re-
leased they formed a gang led by Kowalski which committed twenty house
and store burglaries and safe-crackings in a short period of time,
Early onthe morning of Dec, 22, 1928, they broke into the offices of
Armour Packing Company located at 298 Perry Ste, entering through a
window which they had pryed open, Schaager and Brown were already
inside the structhoe when Policeman Harold Haltam appeared. When
laltam did not stop and raise his hands as ordered by Kowalski, he
shot him, On emerging through the window, both Schlager and Brown
fired bullets into the fallen officerz who, inr eturning the fire,
wounded Kowalski, Sch&ager and Brown were captured a few minutes
after the shhoting and Kowalski, who managed to get to his house, was
arrested there two days later, On the night of their capture, both
