Stair, a native of Indiana, was thé black-sheep of a good and honor-
able family. 3B,fore leaving his wife in Indiana, he had become a
hardened criminal, serving a term in the penitentiary. He was also
incarcerated in a Minnesota insane asylum for a time, In Arkansas,
he and a 23-year-old. woman, Nanetta Osborne established a common-law
relationship and moved to Nevada, Mo., where they did laundry work,
living in the. same house that had previously been occupied by William
Fox, the murderer hanged on “ec. 25, 1883. -THey became friendly with
6l-year-old Jacob Sewell and his 17-year-old son, Mack, who were
camped on the fair grounds at Nevada with a team and wagon and a
string of pohies. On Aug. ¥, 1885, Shair and Miss Osborne went to
the Seweli camp and Ytair killed both the father and son with a
