NEGRO CONFESSES KILLING ANOTHER

Frank McAdams a negro who lived on the Pitts farm near
Columbiana. made a confession to Sheriff Falkner Tuesday
afternoon in which he stated that he killed Jno. Johnson
the night of October 20, (1926). McAdams was arrested
Friday of last week after it became known that Johnson had
.W _.. disappeared.
According to the story the negro told Sheriff Falkner,
he went to Johnson’s home on the night of the killing,
Carring a gun which he had borrowed, to help lead some
cotton, which was to be hauled to the gin the following
day. Later they decided to go hunting and on the way to
the woods -—- he shot Johnson in the head.
McAdams stated that he returned ta Johnson’s house and
leaded on the wagon another bale of cotton that had already
been ginned and hauled both bales toa Sylacauga, where he
solid the cotton. He then sent a telegram to Charley
Mallory, whose mule he had driven asking Charley to come to
Sylacauga and get the mules and wagon, signing the name of
Johnson to the telegram. McAdams returned home on the
train according to his statement.
Johnson lived alone on a2 small farm between Columbiana
and Shelby, his wife being away at work. The telegram
received by Mallory with Johnson’s name signed to it seemed
to explain his disappearance and led his neighbors who knew
of it to think that he had gone to join his wife. When
after several days one of the neighbors wrote his wife of
his disappearance she came home at once and the
investigation was started.
The investigation was started a week ago by Sheriff
Faulkner. Deputy Curtis Falkner and State Officer Sims
with a very slight clue, the telegram from Sylacauga with
Johnson’s name signed and the missing cotton. Following up
this and other clues that developed as they worked the
officers arrested McAdams on Friday. On Saturday morning
after a careful search they found Johnnson’s body in the
woods near his home. He had been shot in the head and
later his head had been severed from his body.
McAdams at first stoutliy denied having anything ta da
with Johnson’s death but did acknowledge that he was the
man who took the cotton to Sylacauga and sold it, Tuesday
afternoon in the presence of Sheriff Falkner and a number
of others he stated that he did kill Johnson in a cotton
Patch near his house but still denied any knowledge of how
the body could have been in the woods where it was found.
A special session of the grand jury was called for
Wednesday morning to make an investigation of the killing.

In a@ later statement McAdams said the Henry McClanahan,
another negra planned with him to kill Johnson four days
before the deed was done. He stated also that McClanahan
was with him when Johnson was killed and had part in the
killing.
The grand jury in special session Wednesday afternoon
indicted both McAdams and McClanahan charging them with
murder. Arranged before Judge EE. S. Lyman, McAdams plead
guilty and McClanahan plead not guilty. Their triais were
set for Monday of next week.

NEGRO SLAYER TO PAY EXTREME PENALTY
AN EXAMPLE OF PROMPT JUSTICE BY SHELBY COURT
Frank McAdams, the negro who was arrested last week
charged with the murder of John Johnson, was tried in the
Circuit court Monday and Tuesday, found quility of murder in
the first degree and given the death penaity. The charge
against Henry McClanahan, another negro who was implicated
in the crime by McAdams, was dismissed and he was released
from jail.
The arrest and trial of Frank McAdams furnishes another
example of prompt justice administered by the officers and
the courts of Shelby County.
John Johnson was killed on the night of October 20,
(1926). The circumstances were such that it was some time
before it was suspected that he was the victim of foul
Play. The officers went to work on the case about Monday,
November ist. On Friday following McAdams was arrested and
charged with having killed Johnson. The following day.
Saturday, dohnmson’s body was found. On Tuesday following
McAdams confessed the crime. On the following day the
grand jury in special session indicted McAdams, charged him
with murder in the first degree. The same day he was
arraigned before Judge Lyman and his trial fixed for
Monday, Movember 22. The trial was completed the following
day and the case went to the jury at noon. After being cut
about two hours the jury returned with its verdict.

Monday and Tuesday, found guil-
ty of murder in the first degree
and rive, the death penalty. The

han,.another negro who was im
plicated in the crime by McAd-
ams, was dismissed and he was
released from jail.
The arrest: and trial of Frank
McAdams furnishes another ex
ample of prompt justice admin-
istered by the officers and the
courts of Shelby county.
John Johnson was killed on the
night of October 20. The circum-
stances were such that it was
some time before it was suspect-
ed that he was the victim of foul
play. The officers went to work
on the case al :ut Monday, No-
vember Ist. On Friday following.
McAdams was arrested and charg-
ed with having killed Johnson.
The following day, Saturday, -
Johnson's body was found, On
Tuesday following McAdams con-
fessed the crime. On the follow-
hing day the grand jury in special
session indicted McAdams, charg-
ing him with murder in the first
degree. The same day he was ar-
raigned before Judge Lyman and
his trial fixed for Monday, No-
vember 22. The triel was com-
pleted' the following day and the
cate_went to the jury at noon.
