Shockley, a 16-year-old unemployed black youth, was a native of Box-
iron, Worcester Co,, Md,, who lived with his family at Omar, Delaware,
On the morning of January 16, 1958, accompanied by his 23«year«old
brother, Harold, who was recently released from the penitentiary and

a sister, he drove to Snow Hill, Md, After leaving his sister at the
home of some friends, he and Harold left, ostensibly to go to Boxiron
and visit other friends, When they reached a rural store in Worcester
Oo.¥which was operated by a 3%-year=old white woman, Mrs, Sarah Hearne,
they parked on the side of the building and entered, Mrs, Hearne
walked to the store from her home Located 95 feet away to wait on then,
Shortly afterwards, another customer entered the building and noticed
larold, who he had previously known, behind the counter and heard

& scuffling noise, He immediately left and summoned help, When he
and others returned, the car containing the two men had left and Mrs,
Hearne's body was found at her home, she having managed to stagger
there, Her Pedal pushers were down from her waist and her underpants
had been torn open in the front. She was dead from stab wounds and
prem dev ing her throat cut, The men, who had returned to Omar wi thout
Stopping for their sister at Snow Hill were arrested that night and
both made complete confessions at the police barracks at Georgetowne
