HAILEY, George Thomas

Hailey, a 2h-year-old white farm laborer, had served time in a Vir-
ginia prison, After his velease, he returned to his native communi-
ty of Clarkton, Halifax Coe He was arrested in North Carolina on a
charge of burglary but granted probation. On Feb. 3, 1950, he way -
laid Marian Lloyd, a lh-year-old girl, as she was walking home from
school through a wooded area and when she resisted his sexual ad-=
vances, he struck her over the head with the barrel of a shot-gun,
The girl was stunned but still managed to put up some resistance and
he shot her in the abdomen and dragged her into the woods, As the
child lay dying and crying for hap mother, he then proceeded to rape
her. When she failed to return home, her parents began searching
for her and they discovered the body late that afternoon, Hailey
Was arrested that evening and his bloody clothes were discovered in
a closet at his home. His shotgun still bore traces of Marian's
blood from the blow that he had struck on her head, Hailey confessed
to the murder, but said that he had not intended to kill her and would
not have done so had she JAMBEXXHERXKX submitted to his sexual ad-
vances. He was taken to the jail in Danville for safekeeping until
his trial when he was returned to Halifax Court House. Hailey attem-
