BARNET, William

Barnet, a 57~year-old native of England, resided in Burlington, Vt.,
where he earned his living as a cattle doctor , ferrier and
through the cleaning of sink-holes and privies. He and his 35-year-
old wife, Anne, were ggth notorious drunkards and quarreled constantly
On the night of Aug. > 1862, in the course of one of their argu-
ments, Barnet cut her throat with a butcher knife. He then went to
a store where he purchased a plug of tobacco and returned to #dis-
cover" the body. He summoned neighbors and a physician, maintaining
that she had killed herself, The coroner stated that even though the
knife was found in Mrs. Barnet's hand, it would have been impossible
for her to have ut her £KBSRE own throat with it in the position
that it was found. Tried and convicted, Barnet was sentenced to
hangg and he was executed at the Vermont %tate Prison on Ate.
