Combs, a 23-year-old Negro carnival worker had a long re-
/ cord of arrests, particularly for night prowling. On the —
night of Aug. 5, 1948, he entered the home of a Clear= _
water, Fla., secretary and raped her. On the night of Aug
23, he entered the home of a married woman in Clearwater —
and, after raping her, s tole several] items including a _
Columbian silver dollar belonging to her husband. The

originally only robbery but that he changed his mind when
