Roesel, a 22-year-old white man, worked for a time for James C, Pitts
a wealthy Summit, N. J., farmer. After he left the employ of Pitts,
he went to New York City where he met and became friendly with George
Manshanda where the two plotted to return to New Jersey and kill both
Pitts and his black houseReeper, Mrs, Mary Davis, before robbing the
premises, On thenight of Sept. 9, 1897, thezentered the Pitts home
where the elderly man was reading a newspap&r before the fireplace
in the kitchen. Mrs, Davis was sleeping on a couch in the same
roome Roesel bludgeoned Pitts to death with an iron bar and then
turned on Mrs, Davis who had been awakened. The blow that he dealt
her was defelected when it struck the wall first and he succeeded in
gashing her head only. She ran screaming from the room and made her
way to a neighbor's house where she reported the incident, Roesel
and Manshand@x were caphured a few weeks later and both confessed,
each claiming that the other had been the actual killer, The State
accepted Manshanda's version of the crime and he was allowed to
